After my brother came I had this realization that I could go
to DC with the kids during the week. The off season is the time to go, and I
know where to park for free. So a day came up where the weather was nice and I
didn’t have any plans and so after Juliet’s first nap we got into the car and
24 minutes later we parked at the base of the Washington monument.
Jack wanted to see fountains, and so we went to the WWII
memorial. Then we headed over to these stairs I had seen on the boat tour
behind the Lincoln
memorial.
It wasn’t as easy to get to as I hoped, and there were no other
tourists there, just joggers (it seemed like a killer workout). But we had a
little picnic lunch and enjoyed peaceful time. After we had enough we were
going to head over to a museum, but Jack decided to go up and see Abe so we did
that (and someone kindly offered to take our picture), then we walked down the reflecting
pool, and ended back at the WWII memorial for the second time.
The weather was so pleasant, the crowds were minimal (I even
saw some secret service people watching out for this couple at the memorial but
I don’t know who they were), and we didn’t have any real objectives for the day
so we could be leisurely and just enjoy our time.
And then we got in the car and headed for home, after a stop
at Aldi.
(I took this picture because Jack had been playing with these two
rocks all day, he called them his ‘rocky friends’ who needs toys?) Juliet
stayed awake for everything and still managed to go down for her second nap by
3pm.
Successful day so far, but then it got better. Thursday’s I would drive to
UMD to pick up a girl who’s mom is taking night classes and also pick up Chris.
Across from where we were waiting was the wienermobile.
And Jack missed it
because he fell asleep on the way to the school and stayed asleep as I
transferred him to the stroller. It was a shame because Jack does love hot dogs.
It was a great day and I’m hoping to have several more of
these downtown outings during the offseason. I’ve got to live it up while living here.
